Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky was born on March 9th 1839 and died on March 16th, 1881 and was one of the Russian composers known as the Five. In deliberate defiance of the established conventions of Western music he strove to achieve a uniquely Russian musical identity using Russian history and folklore as his inspiration for many of his major works including the piano suite Pictures at an Exhibition.
